Who We Are

The Wesley Center is a small group of university students (four to six individuals) in residence at the Wesley Center located at the historic Fairview United Methodist Church in the Near West Side of Bloomington, Indiana just a few blocks from the town square. The Wesley Center is governed by a Board of Directors and the Wesley Center is led by an Executive Director who serves as the administrator and spiritual mentor for the Center’s student-residents and participants.

The Director and the student-residents comprise a covenant community sharing “life together”

  • Breaking bread together, having conversation together, studying together, praying together and serving together;

  • Seeking to know Jesus as companion and leader;

  • Learning, through a “costly discipleship,” what it means to “love God and neighbor and oneself with all of one’s mind and heart and soul and strength”’

  • Serving other persons and communities, close by and around the globe; and,

  • Seeking to discover a life-long vocation of how to become and how to make a significant difference by which grace, mercy and justice; forgiveness, compassion and forthrightness; humility, confidence and joy can empower and bless all peoples, guide the nations, and renew the earth.

The Wesley Center, also, is a strategic initiative to offer activities that enrich the life among and with the residents – children, young people, families, the aged – of the adjacent Near West Side neighborhoods of Bloomington. Each Wesley Student-Resident is encouraged to participate in this work – and to invite friends and other students to join with them in the Wesley Center activities for community development. Additionally, the Wesley Center Student-Residents have the opportunity to travel and participate in the many programs of research, study and service nationally and globally through the United Methodist Church.
